10 - Factors Influencing a Shrinkage Cavity Formation in Ductile Iron

Abstract:

The Ductile Iron Society Research Committee recognized the need for more positive knowledge of the influence of various mold and metal variables on the shrinkage and soundness of ductile iron castings and the need for more quantitative relationships of shrinkage with those major factors. A program was performed at Case Western designed to evaluate the major mold and metal variables. The specimen chosen had a 4% cylinder in the center of 318" plate 12" square with four different diameter corner bosses, two in the drag and two in the cope. A side riser was designed to feed the plate but not the large center boss.
