11 - Factors Influencing Dross Formation in Ductile Iron Castings

Abstract:

Dross was considered by the Ductile Iron Research Committee to be a casting defect which justified more research to determine more quantitatively the factors affecting the occurrence of dross in ductile iron castings. The casting of all molten metals involves the risk of inclusions, slag, and oxidation products that can be generated and entrapped in castings sometimes in sufficient quantity on critical surfaces to cause non serviceable defects and rejection.
