19 - Simple Fracture Test for Transition Temperature of Ductile Iron (Extension of DIS Project #18)
Research Projects
Abstract:
In the conclusions from Ductile Iron Society Research Project 18 titled "Impact Properties of Ductile Iron by Dynamic Tear Testing," it is stated that a correlation exists between Dynamic Tear (DT) energy values and fracture appearance of the broken test pieces. This suggests that a simple impact test based on fracture appearance could be used to determine the ductile to cleavage transition temperature. The research report recommends that a "fracture only" test as an alternative to current DT methods should be developed as a quick method for determining transition temperature. This can serve as a single quality index.
