21 - Use of Sonic Resonance for the Determination of Dynamic Tear Energy in Ductile Iron
Research Projects
Abstract:
The intent of project 21 was to establish the relationship between dynamic tear energy (DT Energy) and acoustic properties. The purpose was to determine whether or not the DT energy can be determined nondestructively, rapidly and inexpensively in ductile iron castings. The advantage of a nondestructive testing is, that properties can be determined in different conditions while keeping certain parameters constant. For one instant, the DT energy could be determined in one single specimen at a variety of temperatures while keeping the chemical composition and the graphite shape exactly the same.
