33 - Mini-Alloying of Ductile Iron with Molybdenum

Abstract:

This study covered the effect of small additions of molybdenum of up to 0.08% on the properties of ferritic grades of ductile iron. The study was conducted to determine if such additions would improve tensile and yield strength without deleterious effects on ductility or impact properties. A number of melts were prepared at both low and high final silicon levels, nominally 2.25 and 2.65%. Test castings from each were then produced with and without the molybdenum addition. Comparisons were made of resulting tensile, dynamic tear and U notch Charpy impact properties for castings in both the as-cast and subcritically annealed conditions.
