8 - Factors Affecting Optimum Properties in Heavy Section Ductile Iron
Research Projects
Abstract:
The Research Committee of the Ductile Iron Society recognized early that one of the research needs of the industry was a better evaluation and understanding of the reduced properties in very heavy sections. It was recognized that other cast metals also have reduced heavy section tensile properties, mostly ductility, as is expected for the coarser structures obtained from slower solidification rates. It was desired to determine what loss was inevitable in ductile iron, how it compared with other metals, what were the major contributing factors, and what were the best practices for optimum retention of tensile properties.
